CHAPTER 17
There was no fragrance of coffee brewing wafting to greet me, so Mike obviously wasnât home. Disappointed, I climbed out of bed and grabbed my robe. As I headed downstairs, I was surprised to see police cars next door. I exchanged my robe for my raincoat, slipped on my shoes, and went out to see what was happening. My neighbor, Ron, was standing there talking to the policemen, pointing my way. As I approached them, I called out, âHey, Ron, whatâs going on?â
âIâve called the police because there was a disturbance here last night. On my security system, I saw someone trying to get into your house. I just showed the tape to the officers here, and itâs too blurry for them to make out who it might be. Iâll have to adjust the camera,â he added with regret.
One of the officers stepped forward and asked me, âDid you hear anything last night?â
âNo, officer, I didnât hear a thing. I immediately went to bed after work and slept straight through the night.â
âDo you always sleep so soundly, miss? If you do, you might need to step up your own security system,â he added.
âWhereâs Mike?â asked Ron, interrupting us.
âHeâs away on business, Ron. Nothing to worry about.â
âHumph,â was all he said in return.
âWell, folks, I guess thereâs nothing more we can do here. Just remember to keep your doors and windows locked at all times. Letâs go,â he said to the other officer.
âDid you hear anything last night, Ron?â I asked when they were gone.
âNooo. I was too tired and went to bed early as well. Actually, I slept better than I have for a while,â he added with a guilty look. âBut I always check my system every morning to be sure I havenât missed anything during the night. Thatâs how I saw someone had been trying to get into your house.â
âGood to know,â I mumbled before turning back toward the house.
âToo bad we couldnât make out who it was,â Ron called after me.
I was filled with unease. The person who came to mind was the man who had chased me at the mall, the same one Iâd seen along the path at Lake Las Vegas. Iâd speak to Brian about it today, and maybe he and Mike could track him down.
Sweet Pea was miffed at being left behind when I went to talk to Ron. I began to explain to her why I had, and she cocked her head and watched me intently while I talked. I wondered what goes through a dogâs mind during times like this. Do they hear what we say only as noise and tone so our words sound like waah, waah, waah? I smiled at the thought.
I called to Sweet Pea and let her out the back. As I did, I looked to the left of the door and saw that one of the plants close to the window was crushed, as if someone had stepped on it. We were so dry
